Leesburg man wins $3 million top prize on Virginia Lottery scratcher

Leesburg, VA – A Leesburg man is $3 million richer after scratching off a Virginia Lottery ticket and uncovering the top prize in the 50X the Money game, becoming the first person to claim the game’s biggest payout.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Food Lion located at 720 South King Street in Leesburg. Upon realizing he had won the game’s $3 million top prize, the man was reportedly overcome with emotion. He chose to remain anonymous, as permitted under Virginia law for prizes of $1 million or more.

The 50X the Money scratcher features prizes ranging from $20 to $3 million. This marks the first top prize to be claimed; two additional top prizes remain unclaimed. The odds of winning the $3 million prize are 1 in 1,142,400, while the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 3.03.

The winner had the option of receiving the full prize over 30 years or a one-time lump sum of $1.5 million before taxes. He chose the cash payout and told Lottery officials he has no immediate plans for the winnings but may use the money to start a business.

All proceeds from the Virginia Lottery benefit K-12 public education. The winner lives in Loudoun County, which received more than $28.8 million in Lottery funding last fiscal year. Overall, the Lottery contributed more than $901 million to education statewide in Fiscal Year 2025, accounting for about 10% of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.
