FRONTON, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) responded to assist the U.S. Border Patrol on Thursday after agents patrolling the border in Starr County came under fire from cartel members in Mexico.

According to DPS, the incident occurred near Fronton, where Border Patrol agents were targeted by gunfire from across the Rio Grande. DPS drone operators captured video of the suspects fleeing deeper into Mexico due to a heightened military presence. Some of the individuals sought refuge on an island situated between the U.S. and Mexico.

“The State of Texas will continue to monitor the area closely and use every resource available to prevent transnational threats to our law enforcement partners and the homeland,” DPS said in a statement.
