WEST NEW YORK, NJ – Drivers traveling through West New York late Saturday night into Sunday morning will encounter a sobriety checkpoint and increased police presence as part of a targeted effort to curb impaired driving. The enforcement initiative will run from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., with officers stationed near 5200 John F. Kennedy Boulevard.
The West New York Police Department announced the operation in advance, emphasizing that the checkpoint is designed to deter dangerous behavior rather than maximize arrests. Officers will briefly stop vehicles and observe drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment.
Checkpoint aims to prevent impaired driving
“The primary goal of this checkpoint is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by discouraging impaired driving before it happens,” the department stated. During the operation, officers will conduct brief interactions with motorists while monitoring for impairment.
The department also stressed that impairment is not limited to alcohol. “Impaired driving is not limited to alcohol certain prescription and over-the-counter medications can also affect a person’s ability to drive safely,” the advisory reads.
Additional patrols and public safety reminders
Beyond the fixed checkpoint, additional patrol units will be deployed throughout the township overnight. The effort is part of an ongoing initiative between the town and police department to reduce crashes and improve roadway safety.
Officials urged residents to plan ahead before heading out. “Plan ahead: use public transportation, a taxi, rideshare, or arrange for a sober friend to get you home safely,” the department advised. They also recommended staying overnight when possible and reporting suspected impaired drivers to law enforcement.
Safety reminders extended to pedestrians as well, with officials noting that those who have been drinking should avoid walking alone and instead seek a safe ride or escort home.
