TOMS RIVER, N.J. – The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office has added a remote-controlled rescue lifebuoy to its emergency response equipment, giving officers another way to reach people in trouble on the water.
Sheriff Michael Mastronardy announced the addition of the U SAFE device, a self-propelled flotation system that responders can remotely steer toward someone in distress. The equipment is intended for situations where a lifeguard is unavailable or immediately entering the water could be difficult for a rescuer.

Remote-Controlled Lifebuoy Can Reach People in Distress
The device is designed to be quickly deployed during water rescues and remotely guided to someone who needs flotation assistance.
“U SAFE is a self-propelled, remote-controlled flotation device that can be deployed quickly to reach a person in distress in the water,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
Officials said the device could be particularly useful “in situations where a lifeguard is not present or immediate physical entry by a rescuer isn’t possible.”
Once deployed, responders can guide the device across the water instead of waiting for a rescuer to physically reach the person before providing flotation support.
“It allows responders to get flotation support to someone in the water quickly and safely,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
Sheriff’s Office Expands Water Rescue Equipment
The new equipment adds another response option in Ocean County, where waterways are a major part of both residential life and recreation.
“This technology gives our team another option to respond fast in water emergencies and help bring people home safely,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
The agency did not specify in its announcement how many U SAFE units it acquired or where the equipment will be stationed.
“The Sheriff’s Office will continue to invest in tools and training that help protect the residents and visitors of Ocean County,” officials said.
