Suspected cockfighting ring busted in Virginia Beach with over 200 birds seized
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — More than 200 birds, including dozens of roosters, were seized in a suspected cockfighting operation after Virginia Beach police responded to a citizen complaint about aggressive dogs on a local property.
On the morning of August 22, officers from the Special Operations and Special Investigations bureaus executed a response at a residence in the 600 block of Princess Anne Road. While initially investigating reports of loose, aggressive dogs, authorities discovered a large number of birds on the property.
The homeowner voluntarily surrendered 213 birds to the Virginia Beach Police Department, including 36 adult roosters. Two birds were found injured and were humanely euthanized by Animal Control.
All animals are now under the supervision of the VBPD Animal Services Bureau. Each bird will be tested for mycoplasma, a common bacterial infection, to assess health status and determine next steps.
Evidence collected during the operation is currently under review by the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
The investigation remains ongoing.
