Woman found slashed as suspect crashes fleeing scene in shocking North Carolina attack

HENDERSON COUNTY, NC — A violent attack left a woman suffering severe head and neck injuries before the suspect crashed his vehicle while trying to flee the scene, authorities said.

The incident unfolded Saturday in the area of Hutch Mountain Road, where deputies responded to reports of a disturbance and discovered the victim with multiple lacerations. Deputies immediately began rendering aid until EMS arrived and rushed her to Mission Hospital.

As first responders worked to treat the victim, emergency dispatchers began receiving calls about a nearby crash — which investigators quickly determined was connected to the same incident.

Officials said the suspect attempted to escape but lost control of his vehicle on a curve, sending it off the roadway and down an embankment.

Deputies located the crashed vehicle, pulled the suspect from the wreckage and turned him over to EMS. He was also transported to Mission Hospital for treatment.

Days later, after being released from the hospital, the suspect was taken into custody with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Task Force.

Authorities identified him as Jonathan Fenton, who now faces a series of serious charges, including attempted first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, assault by strangulation and assault with a deadly weapon.

Fenton is being held at the Henderson County Detention Center as the investigation continues.

Officials have not released additional details about what led up to the attack.
