Wyandanch man indicted for stabbing spree at Hempstead house party

November 23, 2024

MINEOLA, N.Y. — A Wyandanch man has been indicted on multiple charges, including five counts of attempted murder, following an alleged stabbing spree at a Hempstead house party that left five people with life-threatening injuries.

Moses Brooks, 50, was arraigned on Friday in Nassau County before Judge Christopher Quinn on a 23-count indictment. The charges include attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment, sexual abuse, weapon possession, and witness tampering. Bail was set at $500,000 cash, $1 million bond, or $2.5 million partially secured bond.

The violence unfolded on October 6, 2024, at approximately 6:30 a.m. during a basement party on Linden Place in Hempstead. Prosecutors allege that Brooks sexually abused a 26-year-old woman at the party before being removed from the residence by other attendees. Once outside, Brooks is accused of initiating a verbal confrontation, pulling out a knife, and indiscriminately stabbing partygoers gathered in the front yard.

According to Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly, five of the victims sustained severe injuries requiring emergency surgery, including severed arteries, nerve damage, and deep lacerations. Some victims suffered permanent mobility loss, with one woman losing the use of her hand after a slash to her radial artery. Another victim’s neck wounds came dangerously close to severing vital arteries.

“This defendant went on an alleged stabbing spree outside of a house party, viciously and indiscriminately slashing and stabbing at partygoers,” said DA Donnelly. “This kind of random, brutal violence will not go unchecked in Nassau County.”

Brooks fled the scene and was arrested nearly two weeks later, on October 19, at LaGuardia Airport after disembarking from a flight from Florida. Authorities allege that, following his arrest, Brooks attempted to bribe victims with cash to prevent them from cooperating with prosecutors.

If convicted, Brooks faces up to 25 years to life in prison for each attempted murder charge, along with additional potential sentences for other offenses.

The case is being prosecuted by Senior Litigation Counsel Joseph Grasso under the supervision of County Court Trial Bureau Chief Ali Ajamu. Brooks, represented by attorney Christopher Cassar, has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
