YONKERS, NY — In the early hours of yesterday morning, at around 1:00 AM, Edwin Polanco, a 34-year-old resident of Yonkers, has been named for in several arson incidents in southwest Yonkers.
Polanco reportedly set multiple garbage piles on fire, which subsequently damaged a motor vehicle.
Yonkers Police Officers and Detectives swiftly apprehended Polanco, charging him with one count of fourth-degree arson, a felony, and three counts of fifth-degree arson, misdemeanors. Authorities identified four fires reportedly set by Polanco, with an ongoing investigation to determine if he is linked to additional incidents.
Despite the severity of the charges, bail restrictions mandated Polanco’s release with an appearance ticket, a decision that has sparked criticism from local officials.
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano emphasized the gravity of arson, calling the minimal consequences a “slap on the wrist” and expressing concern over the potential encouragement of future criminal activities.
Police Commissioner Sapienza also voiced frustrations about the legislative restrictions on law enforcement, stressing the dangers of allowing someone accused of such serious offenses to remain free pending arraignment.
The police department said it hopes for safer and more legal behavior from Polanco as he awaits his court date.
