Investigators say two juveniles got hold of an illegal firearm before a single gunshot killed a Maryland teenager
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A 15-year-old girl from Maryland was fatally shot in Southeast D.C. after two juveniles gained access to an illegal and unsecured firearm, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
The shooting occurred Saturday at approximately 6:53 p.m. in the 900 block of Barnaby Street SE.
Responding officers found a juvenile female unconscious and not breathing with a critical gunshot wound.
DC Fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene and pronounced the teen dead after finding no signs consistent with life.
Investigators determined that two juveniles had accessed an illegal and unsecured firearm. Police said one of the juveniles manipulated the weapon, causing it to discharge and fatally strike the other juvenile.
The juvenile handling the firearm was not injured.
The victim was identified as Journee Long, 15, of Bowie, Maryland.
As the investigation continued, detectives determined that 33-year-old J’Von Green of Southeast D.C. owned the firearm recovered at the scene.
Green was arrested and charged with possession of an unregistered firearm and ammunition, carrying a pistol without a license, and criminally negligent storage of a firearm.
MPD’s Homicide Branch is continuing its investigation in coordination with the United States Attorney’s Office.
