Hampton, VA – A 20-year-old man died after exiting his car during a late-night chain-reaction crash on Interstate 64 in Hampton, where he and his vehicle were struck again moments later, according to Virginia State Police.
The crash unfolded around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, April 18, on I-64 eastbound near Hampton Roads Center Parkway, involving at least five vehicles and leaving one driver dead and another seriously injured, state police said.
Multi-vehicle crash escalates after lane change
Virginia State Police said the sequence began when a Chevrolet pickup truck attempted a lane change and struck a Chevrolet SUV. The impact pushed the SUV into a jersey wall before it was hit by a Toyota Camry.
All three vehicles came to a stop in the travel lane, creating a hazardous scene for oncoming traffic.
Moments later, the situation turned fatal.
Freddy A. Villaman, 20, of Lake Worth, Florida, exited his Camry after the initial collision. While outside the vehicle, both Villaman and the car were struck by a white Infiniti. The Infiniti then continued forward and hit a white Jeep SUV, adding to the chain reaction.
Villaman died at the scene, according to Virginia State Police.

Investigators identified Trinity Hall, 23, of Lanexa, Virginia, as the driver of the Chevrolet pickup that initiated the crash. Hall has been charged with making an unsafe lane change.

Injuries and survivability factors
The driver of the Chevrolet SUV, Medina Roberson, 34, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Virginia State Police noted that Roberson was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
No injuries were reported for the driver of the Jeep SUV involved in the final impact.
The crash highlights the dangers drivers face after exiting vehicles on high-speed interstates, particularly in active travel lanes where visibility and reaction time are limited.
Crash sequence underscores chain-reaction risk
Multi-vehicle crashes like this often escalate rapidly, especially at night when visibility is reduced and traffic speeds remain high. In this case, what began as a single lane-change collision quickly expanded into a five-vehicle incident with fatal consequences.
The positioning of disabled vehicles in the roadway created an immediate hazard, leaving little time for approaching drivers to react safely.
Virginia State Police have not released additional details about traffic conditions, speed, or visibility at the time of the crash.
Ongoing investigation
State police continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the crash, including the sequence of impacts and contributing factors.
No further information has been released regarding potential additional charges or whether impairment or distraction played a role.
The case remains active as investigators work to reconstruct the events leading up to the fatal collision.
