Woman struck and killed during illegal turn in DC intersection

Washington, DC — A woman crossing a busy Northwest intersection was struck and killed by a driver who fled the scene, leaving investigators searching for the vehicle involved.

Officers responded around 11:11 a.m. Saturday to the intersection of 23rd Street and L Street Northwest for reports of a crash involving a pedestrian.

At the scene, police found 61-year-old Dawn Ciccone suffering critical injuries in the roadway. She was transported to a hospital, where she later died.

Investigators said a 2026 Jeep Wrangler was traveling southbound on 23rd Street in the middle lane before passing vehicles waiting to turn left. The driver then made an illegal left turn from the middle lane and struck Ciccone, who was in the crosswalk.

The vehicle did not stop and fled the scene.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit is handling the case and has not released information about the driver.
