Utica Man Indicted on Multiple Charges Following Shooting

UTICA, NY — The Utica Police Department has announced a significant update regarding a shooting incident that took place on the 1600 block of Neilson St. The event, which occurred on May 31, 2024, resulted in one individual sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.

Following the shooting, the investigation was swiftly handled by the Utica Police Department Major Crimes Unit, which led to the rapid identification of a suspect. In collaboration with the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office, the case was presented to a Grand Jury.

On June 4, 2024, the Grand Jury returned an indictment against 25-year-old Jailan Liggins of Utica. Liggins faces several serious charges, including:

  • Attempted Murder in the second degree
  • Attempted Assault in the first degree
  • Assault in the second degree
  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the second degree
  • Endangering the Welfare of a Child

These charges reflect the severity of the incident and the risks posed to the community, including the presence of a child during the event. The Utica Police Department and the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office continue to work together to ensure justice is served in this case.
