Atlantic City Police Arrest Two Locals, Recover Handgun

Atlantic City, NJ — On July 1, 2024, the Atlantic City Police Department announced the arrest of two men and the recovery of a handgun following a tip provided to law enforcement.

The investigation began on June 28 when Detective Eric Evans received a detailed tip about a man, later identified as Matthew Murphy, seen armed with a handgun on the 2800 block of Pacific Avenue. Detective Michael Oldroyd spotted Murphy and another man, Nathaniel Rodgers, on Atlantic Avenue. The suspects soon entered a rideshare vehicle, which was subsequently stopped by Detectives Troy Grams and James Barrett.

During the interaction with the passengers, officers observed a handgun inside the vehicle. Both men had active arrest warrants and were taken into custody. Murphy was found to be in possession of seven grams of methamphetamine and additional ammunition.

Arrested were:

  • Matthew Murphy, 40, of Egg Harbor Township, NJ, is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of controlled dangerous substances (CDS), and being a certain person not to possess a weapon. Murphy is currently receiving medical attention at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for a pre-arrest condition.
  • Nathaniel Rodgers, 47, of Atlantic City, is charged with contempt and has been remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

The Atlantic City Police Department emphasizes that these charges are merely accusations and not proof of guilt. Under the law, all charged defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
