ABERDEEN, MD — A long-standing lottery tradition led an Aberdeen couple to a $1 million payday after they scored the top prize on the Maryland Lottery’s $20 Gold Rush 777 scratch-off ticket.

The winning ticket, purchased at the Wawa convenience store on 231 North Philadelphia Boulevard, was scratched by the husband, who matched the winning number 18 to a $1 million prize. Doubtful at first, the wife double-checked the ticket using the Maryland Lottery app and was stunned to confirm their life-changing win.

The couple, who have been playing lottery games together since they started dating more than 30 years ago, plan to use the winnings to buy a new home, possibly in Western Maryland or Pennsylvania. They also intend to pay off debts and assist family members with the newfound fortune.

“It still doesn’t feel real,” the wife admitted when claiming the prize on Nov. 22, though the magnitude of the win has slowly begun to sink in. The Wawa store will also receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the top-prize-winning ticket.
