JACKSON, N.J. — A Jackson family is grappling with the devastating loss of their teenage son, Jim Morell, who was struck by a car and killed over the weekend.
The sudden tragedy has left the community mourning while rallying to provide support for the grieving family.
Morell, described as a devoted son, brother, and friend, was known for his bright spirit and ability to connect with others. “Jim moved to his own beat and welcomed everyone into his world,” wrote family friend Salvatore Scalici in a statement on a fundraising page created to assist the family.
The teen’s death comes just weeks before his birthday, adding to the family’s heartbreak as the holiday season begins.
So far, Jackson residents have raised $30,000 to help the family.

The Morell family has faced numerous hardships in recent years, including Jim’s mother, Bettina, battling cancer and his father suffering from a life-threatening infection during the COVID-19 pandemic. Friends of the family are hoping to ease their financial burden by raising funds to cover funeral expenses through the GoFundMe campaign, which has already drawn an outpouring of community support.
Scalici, who described Jim as a beacon of light in his son’s life, emphasized the teen’s impact on those around him. “My son, who was quite introverted back then, formed a strong friendship with Jim, and it truly helped him come out of his shell,” he wrote, recalling cherished memories of the boys’ friendship.
As the family prepares to lay Jim to rest, the campaign reflects the deep bond and generosity of the Jackson community, which has come together to support a family that has long been part of its fabric.
In the wake of tragedy, a community unites to honor the memory of a beloved teen.
