BARTOW, Fla. — A 29-year-old man has been arrested and charged with the murder of his father and the attempted murder of his mother following a shooting late Saturday night in Bartow.

Police say Joseph Voigt shot and killed his father, 63-year-old Marvin Voigt, and critically injured his mother, 58-year-old Susan Voigt, during a domestic dispute inside their home on December 7. Bartow Police officers responded to the scene around 11:20 p.m. to find Marvin Voigt deceased in the driveway with apparent gunshot wounds. Susan Voigt, found inside the home, sustained a serious gunshot wound and remains in critical but stable condition at a hospital.

Authorities issued a BOLO (Be On the Look Out) for Joseph Voigt’s vehicle, which was located at approximately 2:00 a.m. in Orlando on International Drive. Orlando Police conducted a felony traffic stop and took Voigt into custody without incident. He is currently being held at the Orange County Jail and will be transferred to Polk County Jail.

Detectives say Voigt admitted to the shootings, telling investigators his father had been pressuring him to find a job and stop spending so much time playing video games. According to police, Voigt has a prior criminal history that includes arrests for discharging a weapon in a residential area and battery.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd commended the swift actions of local and regional law enforcement, stating, “Thanks to the rapid response of the Bartow Police Department, this violent and dangerous suspect was quickly apprehended. My detectives will ensure Voigt faces the full consequences of his actions.”

Bartow Police Chief Stephen Walker called the incident “tragic and senseless,” expressing gratitude for the assistance of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Orlando Police Department in securing the suspect’s arrest.

A domestic dispute ends in tragedy as a Bartow man is arrested for killing his father and wounding his mother.
