NEWARK, Del. — A Newark man has been charged following an investigation into a vehicle theft and subsequent reckless driving incident that ended in a crash, police said.
George Shaw, 36, was identified as the suspect in the November incident through forensic evidence, video surveillance, and witness interviews, according to Newark Police. Investigators determined that Shaw stole a vehicle from a dealership on East Cleveland Avenue and fled the scene, driving recklessly before crashing the vehicle. An officer had spotted the vehicle but was unable to initiate a traffic stop prior to the crash.
On November 28, 2024, Shaw was formally arrested at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution, where he was already being held on unrelated charges. He now faces multiple charges, including theft over $1,500, two counts of criminal mischief, reckless driving, and additional traffic offenses.
Shaw appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 via video and was ordered to be held in default of $6,000 cash bail. He remains in custody at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.
