FEDERALSBURG, Md. — A two-vehicle collision late Sunday night in Caroline County claimed the life of a 17-year-old and left two others injured, Maryland State Police said.
The victim, identified as Trevor Whiteley of Federalsburg, Maryland, was pronounced dead at the scene after the 2010 Ford Fusion he was riding in rear-ended a dump truck. The crash occurred shortly before midnight on Route 313, north of Chipmans Lane, according to investigators.
The driver of the Ford, Nathan D’Orlando, 19, of Denton, Maryland, was airlifted to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore by Maryland State Police Aviation Command. The operator of the dump truck, William Andrew, 24, of Cordova, Maryland, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Police say the dump truck, contracted by the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration, had been conducting snow removal and salting operations. A preliminary investigation revealed the truck was stopped partially on the shoulder and in the roadway at the time of the crash.
Authorities are investigating whether alcohol played a role in the collision. The Maryland State Police Crash Team and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division are leading the ongoing investigation.
