Suspect killed in Akron officer-involved shooting after firing at police

AKRON, Ohio — A man in his 30s was fatally shot by Akron police Monday morning after he opened fire on officers during a traffic stop involving a stolen vehicle, authorities said.

The incident began around 8:45 a.m. when officers located a stolen white Toyota Camry near Kenmore Boulevard and Lakeshore Boulevard. As police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fired at them, prompting officers to return fire, striking the suspect at least once, according to the Akron Police Department.

Officers provided emergency medical aid until paramedics arrived, but the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His identity has not yet been released, pending family notification.

Three officers involved in the shooting, with service tenures ranging from nine to 30 years, have been placed on paid administrative leave, in accordance with department policy.

The incident remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
