SUITLAND, Md. — A retired U.S. Postal Service worker won the $50,000 top prize in the Maryland Lottery’s Bonus Match 5 game, thanks to a Quick Pick ticket.

The Washington, D.C. resident, who usually plays a pattern of numbers based on past drawings, said the random selection proved to be his lucky break in the March 1 drawing. He has previously come close to winning using his system, often matching four out of five numbers.

“It didn’t faze me at all,” the winner said, noting that he plans to stick with his strategy while incorporating more Quick Pick numbers.

The winning ticket was purchased at Meyers Liquors in Suitland, which will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the ticket.
