Man fatally shot on East Capitol Street in late-night Southeast DC attack

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A 25-year-old man was killed in a Southeast D.C. shooting late Tuesday night in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, prompting a homicide investigation by city officials.

The shooting happened shortly after 10 p.m. in the 1200 block of East Capitol Street, Southeast. Emergency crews arrived to find the man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital but died after life-saving efforts failed.

The victim was identified as Marcellus Smith, a Southeast D.C. resident. Officials confirmed his death on Thursday following notification of next of kin.

The investigation remains active as officials continue to seek leads. No suspects have been publicly named, and no motive has been released.

The 1200 block remained closed for several hours Tuesday night as the scene was processed.

Officials urge information from the public

The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Smith’s death.

Anyone with knowledge of this incident is asked to take no action but contact police by calling (202) 727-9099 or by texting a tip to the Department’s TEXT TIP LINE at 50411. Tipsters may remain anonymous.

The shooting adds to an ongoing trend of violent incidents in parts of Southeast D.C., though details remain limited in this case.

No other injuries were reported during the incident.
