PLAINFIELD, N.J. — A devastating flood struck the Hope 4 Paws Humane Society in Plainfield on Tuesday night, leaving the shelter completely underwater and destroying all of its supplies — but sparing the lives of every animal.
The shelter, also known as the Plainfield Area Humane Society, located at 75 Rock Avenue, reported receiving multiple alerts from its alarm system as water levels began to rise late Tuesday. By the time staff arrived, the building had been inundated.
“We received several alerts from our alarm company last night and knew we were taking in water. What we didn’t expect was for the entire shelter to be underwater,” the shelter stated in a message posted Wednesday. “Our director, shelter manager, a board member and volunteer were able to swim through the debris to get inside and check on the animals.”
Rescuers found animals trapped in darkened cages with floodwaters reaching chest level. Despite the dangerous conditions, all animals were successfully relocated to higher ground and none were lost.
While the animals are safe, the shelter reported a complete loss of food, bedding, litter, and essential supplies.
“We have absolutely nothing… What we DO have are our animals and for that we are eternally grateful,” the shelter said.
The extent of the flooding’s damage to the shelter’s structure is still being assessed. Officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the flooding.
