FREDERICK, Md. — A retired federal employee from Frederick has won $50,000 on a Maryland Lottery scratch-off ticket — marking the second major prize of her life.

The woman, who asked not to be named, previously won $100,000 in August 2021 from a bingo scratch-off purchased at a grocery store in Frederick. Her latest win came on a $20 $50,000 CASH ticket bought at the Washingtonian Express convenience store.

“That this could happen to me again, it’s just mind-boggling,” she told Lottery officials, recalling the urge to shout when she realized she’d hit another jackpot. “The store was crowded so I fought back the urge to shout it out.”

The win was unintentional. She explained that she had meant to purchase two tickets but accidentally hit the quantity button a third time. Instead of canceling, she went through with the extra ticket — which turned out to be the winner.

“This whole thing was an accident,” she said. “I decided to buy that third ticket and, as luck would have it, that ticket turned out to be the ticket.”

The $50,000 CASH scratch-off launched in December 2022 with 160 top prizes. As of Monday, 98 of those have been claimed, with 62 top prizes and 72 $5,000 second-tier prizes still in circulation.

The Frederick County winner plans to keep this win as quiet as possible.
