CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A Newton Police Department lieutenant has been indicted and arrested for second-degree murder following a deadly officer-involved shooting during a June traffic stop, authorities announced.
Carlos Alverto Uribe, 28, is accused of fatally shooting 21-year-old Camden Childers on June 26. The incident unfolded during what authorities described as a high-speed pursuit that ended in a confrontation.
Following the shooting, the Newton Police Department requested an independent investigation from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. The SBI completed its inquiry and submitted the findings to the Catawba County District Attorney’s Office.
On Wednesday, a Catawba County grand jury returned a true bill of indictment charging Uribe with one count of second-degree murder.
Uribe, who holds the rank of lieutenant, is currently on administrative leave without pay from the Newton Police Department. His arrest was confirmed in a press release issued by the SBI.
The District Attorney’s Office has not released further details on the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
