15-acre brush fire in nanjemoy burns for hours as 22 departments respond

NANJEMOY, MD — A large brush fire tore through approximately 15 acres in Nanjemoy on Saturday, prompting a massive emergency response that drew crews from over 20 fire departments across Southern Maryland.

According to the Tenth District Volunteer Fire Department, the fire broke out in a wooded area and required nearly 9 hours of active firefighting before it was brought under control. Chief 8A took command and issued a general alarm, triggering mutual aid from 22 surrounding departments.

Crews operated multiple units on scene, including Brush 8, Engine 8-4, Tanker 8, and UTV 8. Firefighters worked in challenging conditions to contain the spread of the fire, which officials say remained within the estimated 15-acre perimeter.

No injuries or damage to structures were reported. The cause of the fire has not yet been released.
