Lottery ticket puts retired railroad worker on track to $100K win
SILVER SPRING, MD — A retired railroad worker and Army veteran from Montgomery County is celebrating a six-figure windfall after a scratch-off ticket he purchased at a Safeway in Wheaton turned out to be a $100,000 winner.
Clifford Briggs of Silver Spring claimed his prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on August 29, after uncovering the top prize on the $10 Double Your Money scratch-off. Briggs, who stopped to buy groceries before visiting the lottery kiosk inside the store at 11201 Georgia Avenue, purchased six tickets — and one paid off big.
Briggs said he initially believed he had won $10,000 when he matched his first number. A second match added another $10,000, prompting calls to friends and family. But the surprises kept coming. When he finally scratched off the entire ticket, he realized he was holding a $100,000 winner.
Still in disbelief, he made a copy of the ticket and went to a nearby 7-Eleven to scan it. The lottery machine confirmed it — a top-tier $100,000 prize.
Briggs said he plans to use the winnings to pay off his car and will deposit the rest into savings. Over the years, he’s had modest wins through both the lottery and local casinos, but this is his largest single prize to date.
The Safeway store that sold the winning ticket will receive a $1,000 bonus.
The Double Your Money game launched in July and began with 14 top prizes of $100,000. After Briggs’ win, 10 top prizes remain unclaimed, along with hundreds of other cash prizes across multiple tiers.
