Baltimore, MD – A New Jersey man’s family visit in Maryland turned into an unexpected payday after a spur-of-the-moment decision to buy a Powerball ticket landed him a $50,000 prize.
The man was walking in a park with his nephews in College Park on Aug. 30 when he decided to purchase a ticket for that night’s drawing, which carried a $950 million jackpot. He bought five quick-pick combinations for $10 at Mundo Market on Edgewood Road.
While he didn’t snag the jackpot — which would later grow to $1.787 billion before being won in the Sept. 6 drawing — his ticket matched five out of six numbers, securing him the $50,000 payout.
He claimed the prize Sept. 8 at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore, smiling as he repeated his personal motto: “You never know.”
The winner said he hadn’t made plans yet for his unexpected windfall, but added that the experience has convinced him to keep playing.
“That’s when luck struck,” he said of his winning ticket.
