Mikie Sherrill vows to fight Trumpism, likens GOP rallies to January 6 imagery
Montclair, NJ – Rep. Mikie Sherrill says she is mourning the loss of consverative icon Charlie Kirk this week, but her messaging on the campaign trail and in Washington D.C. has been one of urging Democrats to “fight back” against what she called the rise of Trumpism while casting sharp criticism on the image of Republicans in New Jersey.
Sherrill, a Democrat representing the state’s 11th Congressional District, now running for governor, invoked her deceased grandfather’s advice as a rallying cry to continue the fight against Trump and “Trumpism”.
“My grandpa would be rolling over in his grave right now at what is going on in this country,” she said. “You know what he would say? He’d say, fight back. Yeah. Fight back. Fight back. Fight back.”
She called the fight against President Donald Trump and his supporters a defining struggle for the years ahead, saying Democrats must stay organized and focused.
“We can make sure that we are defeating Trumpism and MAGA by this pathway forward,” Sherrill said. “I think it’ll set the table for 2026 and on to 2028, where we drive them out of office.”
The Virginia-born congresswoman also delivered sharp remarks about everyday New Jerseyans at Republican rallies in the state, suggesting the image projected by some supporters mirrors that of the Capitol rioters from January 6, 2021.
“Here in New Jersey, when we see what goes on in some of the Republican rallies and stuff, I think there’s a vision of people who follow Donald Trump and are too far to the right,” Sherrill said. “There’s a certain vision of how they might look, like a January 6th protester or something.”
