West New York man gets 45 years for beating his mother to death in 2021
WEST NEW YORK, NJ – A quiet afternoon on 66th Street turned into a grim crime scene when a 62-year-old woman was found dead in her bedroom, and now, nearly five years later, her son has been sentenced to spend the next four decades behind bars for her murder.
On Thursday, Emmanuel Gonzalez, 38, was sentenced to 45 years in New Jersey State Prison for the brutal 2021 killing of his mother, Irma Gonzalez. The ruling, handed down by Judge Angelo Servidio, follows Gonzalez’s conviction in January for murder. The sentence falls under the No Early Release Act, meaning he must serve at least 85 percent before becoming eligible for parole.
Police responded to the family’s West New York home on Thursday, January 14, 2021, around 1:30 p.m. after receiving a report of an unresponsive woman. Emmanuel Gonzalez met officers at the front door and led them to a bedroom where his mother was found lifeless.
Irma Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene. The Regional Medical Examiner later determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma and ruled it a homicide.
Following an investigation by law enforcement and prosecutors, Gonzalez was arrested and charged in connection with the killing. Prosecutors presented the case to a jury earlier this year, which returned a guilty verdict in January.
Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Nicole Ghezzar led the state’s case during the trial, culminating in Thursday’s sentencing.
