Cape May homeowner battles deck blaze before firefighters arrive

CAPE MAY, NJ – A quick-thinking homeowner helped prevent a serious house fire early Tuesday morning after flames broke out on a rear deck along Bridge Lane.

Fire crews arrived just after 6 a.m. to find that much of the blaze had already been knocked down by the resident using a garden hose.

Members of the Cape May Firefighters IAFF Local 3495 company moved swiftly to extinguish the remaining hot spots and check for fire extension inside the home.

Firefighters then assisted with ventilation efforts to clear smoke and ensure the residence was safe.

Homeowner’s quick action contained fire

According to the department’s Facebook post, the homeowner’s early response likely prevented the fire from spreading to the interior of the structure. The post praised the individual’s alertness and calm under pressure, noting that while professional assistance is always recommended, the initial suppression made a critical difference in limiting damage.

No injuries and minimal damage

No injuries were reported, and the damage appeared confined to the deck area, officials said. Firefighters remained on scene for an extended period to confirm the blaze was fully extinguished.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, though initial reports suggest it may have been accidental.
