Latrobe man charged after handgun found in carry-on at Pittsburgh International Airport checkpoint

Pittsburgh, PA – A 51-year-old Latrobe man is facing a criminal charge after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers discovered a firearm in his carry-on bag at the main security checkpoint at Pittsburgh International Airport late Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:44 a.m. on October 29 when TSA officers spotted the weapon during routine screening and alerted the Allegheny County Police Department. Officers responded to the checkpoint and identified the passenger as John Frye.

Authorities say Frye did not possess a valid concealed carry permit. He has been charged with one misdemeanor count of carrying a firearm without a license. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was also notified of the incident.

In addition to potential criminal penalties, passengers found with firearms at airport security checkpoints can face significant civil fines from the TSA — up to $10,000 for a first offense and up to $13,910 for repeat violations. The firearm was secured by authorities and no injuries or disruptions were reported.

The case remains under investigation, and Frye is expected to face further proceedings in Allegheny County court.
