DC officer fatally shoots man in Georgetown home after alleged knife, screwdriver attack
WASHINGTON, DC — A man was shot and killed by a D.C. police officer Friday evening in Georgetown after allegedly lunging at the officer with a knife and screwdriver during a confrontation inside a home on Reservoir Road, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
The shooting happened shortly before 7 p.m. in the 4400 block of Reservoir Road NW after police responded to a triggered alarm. Officers were aware the individual inside the home was not permitted to be there due to a civil protection order issued October 30.
Police said the man and the resident were previously roommates, and the protection order had been granted after a series of threats and violent behavior by the suspect.
When officers arrived, they observed the suspect inside the home and issued multiple commands for him to exit. After he refused, police entered the house through an unlocked door and continued to issue verbal commands as they moved through the residence.
While approaching the second floor, one of the officers was allegedly confronted by the suspect at close range. Police say the man lunged at the officer while holding both a knife and a screwdriver. The officer discharged his firearm, striking the man.
Despite immediate medical aid by officers and arriving medics, the man was pronounced dead. No officers were injured during the incident.
The Metropolitan Police Department is conducting an internal investigation into the use of force, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
