PHILADELPHIA, PA – A mother and her two young children died early Tuesday morning after a fire broke out inside their North Philadelphia home, authorities said.
Firefighters and police responded just before 1 a.m. to reports of people trapped inside a residence on the 3400 block of North Hope Street.
Emergency crews found heavy smoke and flames concentrated in the kitchen area as they entered the home.
Victims found unresponsive inside burning home
Fire personnel discovered 46-year-old Nidre Annette Ayala unresponsive on the staircase leading to the second floor. She was transported to Temple University Hospital in critical condition with extensive burns and later died at 5:11 a.m.
Two children, identified as 6-year-old Kataleya Garcia and 5-year-old Sebastian Rodriguez-DeJesus, were found unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom with severe burns. They were rushed to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, where both were pronounced dead.
The Philadelphia Fire Department confirmed that all residents had been located and no additional victims were found after a full search of the property.
Investigation into cause ongoing
Investigators processed the scene early Tuesday and said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire officials reported no immediate evidence of arson but have not ruled out accidental causes.
Authorities have not disclosed how the fire began or whether smoke alarms were present inside the home.
The tragedy marks one of Philadelphia’s deadliest residential fires this year, prompting renewed concern over fire safety in older rowhouse neighborhoods.
