Firefighters rescue dog, contain kitchen blaze in perth amboy high-rise

PERTH AMBOY, NJ – Fire crews responded late Wednesday afternoon to a fire at a residential high-rise on Fayette Street that left several residents temporarily displaced but caused no injuries.

The Perth Amboy Fire Department said units were dispatched around 5:05 p.m. to 40 Fayette Street after reports of smoke coming from the building’s first and second floors.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy smoke and initiated a full response, quickly locating the blaze in a first-floor apartment kitchen.

Crews worked swiftly to extinguish the fire and contain it to the single unit, preventing further spread throughout the building.

Dog revived after smoke exposure

During a search of the affected unit, firefighters found a dog suffering from smoke exposure and administered oxygen using a pet rescue mask.

Once ventilation cleared smoke from the upper floors, all residents were safely allowed to return to their apartments.

Four residents displaced, no injuries reported

City relocation officers assisted four displaced occupants while the rest of the building was deemed safe for re-entry.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Perth Amboy Fire Investigation Unit.

Units responding to the scene included Engine 1, Engine 2, Truck 2, Truck 3, Rescue 1, and command units C-1, C-3, C-4, and C-5.
