Delaware felon fired at home while hunting for wrong person

Harrington man arrested after repeated shots-fired incidents in residential area

HARRINGTON, DE — A 43-year-old man was arrested following a series of shots-fired incidents in a Harrington neighborhood over the weekend, where police say he returned to the same location multiple times and fired toward a residence while searching for a family member who was not connected to the home.

Dionne Warner, of Harrington, was taken into custody without incident on Sunday morning at his residence, according to Delaware State Police. Investigators say Warner, a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms, is facing multiple felony charges including aggravated menacing, weapons offenses, and harassment.

The first report of gunfire came around 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 29, in the 500 block of Staytonville Road. A small passenger car was seen leaving the area after several shots were heard. Troopers returned to the same address around 11:15 p.m. when the vehicle reportedly circled back and fired another shot.

On Sunday, the pattern continued. Around 5:00 a.m., additional shots were reported from the same car. By 10:30 a.m., witnesses saw a man yelling from the vehicle — later identified as Warner — as it drove through the neighborhood again. No one was injured and no homes were struck in any of the incidents.

Police recovered a spent shell casing and live rounds from the scene. Through investigative leads, Warner was identified as the suspect. Detectives say he believed a relative was inside one of the homes, but confirmed there was no known connection between that individual and any of the residents.

Warner was charged with multiple felonies, including:

  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony
  • Possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person prohibited
  • Aggravated menacing (four counts)
  • Harassment (four counts)

He was arraigned and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $47,000 cash bond.
