Knife-wielding suspect arrested after violent robbery attempt on Kenilworth Avenue

Washington, DC — A robbery attempt inside a Northeast business quickly escalated into violence Saturday afternoon when a suspect pulled a knife during a struggle with an employee, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Around 12:11 p.m., officers from the Sixth District responded to a report of a robbery in progress in the 1500 block of Kenilworth Avenue NE. Police say the suspect entered the establishment and attempted to steal merchandise. When an employee intervened, a confrontation followed, during which the suspect brandished a knife and slashed the employee’s hand.

The suspect fled the scene on foot, but responding officers located and arrested the individual within minutes during a search of the area.

The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Alexis Rivera, who has no fixed address. Rivera has been charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Knife).

The injured employee sustained a laceration but did not require hospitalization. Investigators recovered the weapon and are reviewing surveillance footage as part of the ongoing investigation.
