MOUNT RAINIER, MD – A vehicle fire at 34th Street and Arundel Road brought traffic to a standstill Thursday afternoon as emergency crews worked to contain the blaze.

The fire, reported around 4 p.m., drew a full response from both police and fire department units.

Officials confirmed the flames were quickly extinguished and no injuries have been reported.

Drivers were urged to steer clear of the area as roadblocks and detours were set up while crews handled cleanup and investigation.

The City of Mount Rainier Police Department said firefighters arrived within minutes and contained the fire before it could spread to nearby vehicles or structures. Officers redirected traffic from 34th Street and surrounding routes as a precaution.

Witnesses described seeing thick smoke rising above the intersection before firefighters doused the vehicle. Crews remained on-site to inspect the burned vehicle and ensure hazardous materials were cleared from the roadway.

Roads expected to reopen soon

Authorities said the intersection will reopen once debris is cleared and the vehicle is towed from the scene. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and investigators are reviewing the incident.
