NEW YORK, N.Y. – The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the New York City metro region, forecasting heavy snowfall beginning late Friday afternoon and continuing into Saturday, with accumulations of 4 to 8 inches possible.
The warning, in effect from 4 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday, covers New York City, Long Island, northeast New Jersey, and southern Connecticut. Forecasters say snow will begin during the late afternoon hours, becoming heavy at times overnight before tapering off by midday Saturday.
Meteorologists warn that travel conditions could deteriorate rapidly Friday evening as snow intensifies during the commute. The National Weather Service urges motorists to carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water, in case of delays or vehicle disablement.
Wind chills will range from the mid-teens to low 20s, with northeast winds of 6 to 10 mph through Saturday. After the storm clears, skies will remain mostly cloudy with temperatures holding near 29 degrees before dropping into the low 20s overnight.
The storm marks one of the first significant snow events of the winter season for the tri-state region, likely impacting transportation and holiday travel through the weekend.
Forecasters say a winter storm will bring 4 to 8 inches of snow to the New York City area from Friday evening into Saturday, making for difficult travel conditions.
