BRONX, NY – A 26-year-old man from Washington state has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the 2023 killing of a 48-year-old man inside a Bronx apartment, police announced Thursday.

According to the NYPD, Essa Kouyate was taken into custody on Jan. 8 at 11:31 a.m. following an ongoing investigation by detectives in the 42nd Precinct. He is accused in the death of Yaya Kouyate, who was found unresponsive in his apartment at 1463 Hoe Avenue on April 14, 2023.

Police were called to the residence around 10:30 a.m. that day after receiving a 911 report of an unconscious man. Officers discovered the victim lying face up on the bathroom floor. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. While there were no visible signs of trauma, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later ruled the death a homicide caused by compression of the neck.

Authorities did not immediately release details about what led to the arrest or the relationship between the suspect and the victim, though both share the same surname.
