Cumberland, MD – A 22-year-old West Virginia man was arrested Sunday after police say he tried to break into two homes and assaulted an officer during a struggle in a Cumberland neighborhood.

Officers responded February 22 to the 300 block of Bedford Street for a reported attempted breaking and entering after a resident saw a man trying to gain entry into a home. As the first officer arrived, the suspect fled on foot onto Independence Street.

A second officer responding to the area spotted a man matching the description attempting to enter a residence in the 100 block of Columbia Street. When officers tried to detain him, the suspect resisted and assaulted an officer before being taken into custody after a brief struggle.

Police identified the suspect as Chandler Scott Long, 22, of Ridgeley, West Virginia. He was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center for an initial appearance and later released on an unsecured $2,500 personal bond.

Long is charged with Attempted Burglary, second-degree assault, trespassing on posted property, resisting or interfering with arrest, failure to obey a lawful order, and intoxicated public disturbance.

Theft summons served in Virginia Avenue case

In a separate incident, Cumberland Police Department officers served Delores Sue Laura Haines, 35, of Cumberland, with a criminal summons for theft stemming from a February 19 complaint at a business in the 400 block of Virginia Avenue.

Police allege Haines concealed several unpaid items inside a bag and left the store without paying. An investigating officer reviewed surveillance footage and positively identified her as the suspect. Charges were filed through the Allegany County District Court Commissioner’s Office.

Haines was charged with theft of less than $100 and was released pending trial after signing for the summons.

Traffic stop leads to additional arrest

On February 22, an officer conducted a traffic stop on East Industrial Boulevard and informed the driver of an observed violation. According to police, the driver refused multiple requests to provide identification.

The individual was identified as Bo Allen Becker, 32, of Cumberland. He was arrested and transported to the Allegany County Detention Center for an initial appearance before being released on his own recognizance.

Becker faces charges including Failure to Obey a Lawful Order, obstructing and hindering, and related traffic offenses.
