NJSIAA: There’s Still Hope for a Spring High School Sports Season in New Jersey

TRENTON, NJ-Although the NJSIAA has canceled the remainder of the boys and girls basketball championships, the spring 2020 sports season is not yet lost.  School sports cannot resume until the school closures end, but when they do, the best possible effort will be made to salvage the spring season if possible.

It all depends upon when schools will reopen.

“The NJSIAA will make every effort to take advantage of whatever part of the spring sports season remains, including holding championships,” the NJSIAA said in a statement. “The NJSIAA remains committed to providing student-athletes as many opportunities as possible.”

During the break, no member school may conduct practices and there is a mandatory no-contact period between coaches and players.  If the season does start late, the mandatory six days of practice before a season will once again be required. Those six days include scrimmages.  The season can start on the eighth day, after one day of rest.

As of now, no decision on spring championships has been made.  A shortened season could lead to a modified post-season championship structure as directed by the NJSIAA.
