Henderson County, NC – Two people are facing felony charges after authorities say they abandoned dogs inside a Henderson County home for weeks without proper care.

Animal Enforcement officers responded Thursday, Feb. 26 to a welfare check at a residence after receiving a report that two dogs may have been left behind when the occupants moved out, according to the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office.

Dogs found starving inside home

When officers arrived at the residence, they observed two dogs inside the home looking out through a front window.

Investigators said both animals appeared severely underweight, with their ribs, backbone, and hips clearly visible.

Animal Enforcement officers seized the dogs and transported them to Henderson County Animal Services for medical evaluation and care.

During the investigation, authorities determined the individuals who had been living at the home had moved out and left the dogs behind.

William Sanders, 26, and Pamela Lopez, 24, were both charged with felony animal cruelty.

Officials said both suspects were arrested without incident and booked into the Henderson County Detention Center.

Dogs recovering in animal services care

Since arriving at Henderson County Animal Services, officials say both dogs have already gained about 10 pounds during their first week in care.

The animals are receiving proper nutrition, medical treatment, and ongoing care as they recover.

Sheriff Lowell Griffin thanked the Animal Enforcement team and others who assisted in the investigation and rescue.
