Scam suspect posing as federal agent caught returning for more cash
HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A brazen scam involving a man posing as a federal agent unraveled after police set up a sting when the suspect allegedly tried to return for even more cash.
The scheme targeted a 55-year-old Mays Landing resident, who was threatened with arrest unless he handed over money to someone claiming to be with the Federal Trade Commission.
The suspect allegedly showed what appeared to be a badge and walked away with about $63,000 in cash along with $6,000 in Lululemon gift cards.
Investigators later learned the suspects planned a second meetup to collect another $63,000 — but this time, police were waiting.
When the suspect arrived on March 17, officers moved in and made the arrest.
Authorities identified the suspect as 20-year-old Gurpreet Singh of Queens, New York.
He is facing multiple serious charges, including theft, conspiracy, theft by deception, theft by extortion, and impersonating a law enforcement officer.
Officials say Singh was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility following his arrest.
Police are urging residents to remain cautious, noting that legitimate federal agencies will never demand immediate payment or threaten arrest in exchange for money.
