Fatal morning collision near Monmouth Mall jughandle remains under investigation

Eatontown, NJ – A 22-year-old man was killed Friday morning after being struck by a vehicle along State Route 35 in Eatontown, prompting an ongoing multi-agency investigation, authorities said.

The crash occurred at approximately 7:18 a.m. near the Monmouth Mall jughandle, where responding officers found an adult male pedestrian critically injured following a collision with a southbound vehicle. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead just over 20 minutes later.

Officials later identified the victim as Edwin Chavez-Solis, 22.

Investigation underway into fatal collision

According to Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago, “On Friday, March 27 at approximately 7:18 a.m., members of the Eatontown Police Department responded to the area of State Route 35 and the Monmouth Mall Jughandle.” Authorities added, “A preliminary investigation revealed that a male driver was operating a 2019 Honda Insight travelling southbound on State Route 35 when the collision with an adult male walking from the eastbound side of the roadway occurred.”

The prosecutor’s office confirmed the driver remained at the scene and was not injured. “The pedestrian, later identified as Edwin Chavez-Solis, 22, was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 7:40 a.m.,” officials said.

Multi-agency response continues

The investigation is being conducted by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, the Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART), and the Eatontown Police Department.

Authorities emphasized that the case remains active. “No charges or summonses have been issued with regard to the incident at this time,” officials said.
