Norfolk couple sentenced to 25 years each in killing of disabled lodger

A disabled man’s final days inside a Norfolk apartment ended in prolonged violence, prosecutors say, after a couple who had taken him in turned on him over rent and chores, culminating in a killing that left a body hidden in their home for two days.

NORFOLK, VA – Kristie Lynch was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison for the murder of 45-year-old Jose Moreno, matching the sentence previously handed to her husband, James Lynch, in the same case. The couple were convicted along different legal paths—Kristie Lynch by jury verdict in September and James Lynch by a prior guilty plea—but received identical prison terms for Moreno’s death in August 2023.

Moreno, who used a walker due to a physical disability, had been invited to live with the Lynches after meeting them at church in 2022. In exchange for housing, he was required to contribute part of his Supplemental Security Disability Income and complete household chores, according to court records.

Pattern of abuse inside apartment

Prosecutors said the arrangement devolved into repeated violence when Moreno failed to meet expectations. James Lynch later admitted the couple physically “punished” Moreno over late rent and incomplete chores. Authorities said he was also beaten and had his phone taken away when he spoke Spanish during calls with family.

In the days leading up to Moreno’s death, the assaults intensified. Prosecutors said James Lynch struck Moreno with a frying pan, causing severe head injuries, and refused to seek medical care. The couple then used a baseball bat and strangled Moreno with a belt and dog leash. An autopsy later determined he died from a combination of strangulation and blunt force trauma.

“This case is one of the most heinous ways to murder someone that I could imagine,” Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Emily Woodley said during sentencing.

After Moreno died, his body remained in the apartment for two days. The Lynches eventually called 911 after consulting with a pastor. Officers responding to the Mariner’s Way residence found Moreno’s naked body under a blanket at the bottom of a staircase, covered in bruises, cuts, and ligature marks.

Statements and courtroom testimony

According to court documents, both defendants admitted to striking Moreno with a frying pan and beating him with a bat. They also acknowledged placing a “dog leash around his neck” and “to causing victim’s injuries.”

Kristie Lynch told police Moreno had made unwanted contact with her and said she urged her husband to act, telling him to “man up,” “grow a set” and “go take care of your boy,” prosecutors said. James Lynch claimed Moreno resisted during the attack and described him as having a “demon”-like strength.

Investigators documented blood throughout the apartment, including on walls, floors, and the ceiling in the kitchen and stairwell.

“The word ‘shocking’ has been overused but the suffering that they Lynches inflicted on Mr. Moreno – a disabled man they claimed to have been ‘helping’ and who had ‘nowhere to go’ – is truly shocking,” Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi said. “It is possible to kill another person in an instant using a gun, but to beat and strangle another person to death takes serious physical exertion and a sustained determination to inflict pain and to kill.”

Kristie Lynch, who maintained she did not participate in the killing, addressed the court briefly before sentencing. “I hope someday that they (Moreno’s family) can find it in their heart to forgive me,” she said.
