NEWARK, N.J. – The Newark Department of Public Safety is asking for the public’s help locating a man wanted for questioning in connection with a shooting that left him injured last month in the city’s South Ward.
Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. identified the individual as Nahji S. Mayes, 29, of Newark. Police said Mayes is sought for questioning following a March 20 shooting incident in the 70 block of Baldwin Avenue.
Man found wounded at scene
Officers responded at approximately 8:46 p.m. to reports of a shooting in progress and found Mayes lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his right leg. Responding officers applied a tourniquet to control bleeding until Emergency Medical Services arrived.
Mayes was transported to University Hospital for treatment. According to police, he told officers at the scene that he had been shot while taking out the trash.

Investigation remains active
Authorities have not disclosed additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting or why Mayes is now being sought for questioning. No arrests have been announced in connection with the incident.
The case remains under investigation by the Newark Police Division. Officials are urging anyone with information about Mayes’ whereabouts to come forward.
