New York, New York — A machete-wielding man slashed three people inside Grand Central Terminal on Sunday morning before being shot and killed by officers from the New York Police Department Transit Bureau, authorities said.

The incident unfolded around 9:40 a.m. near East 42nd Street and Park Avenue, when officers were alerted by a civilian who reported an active attack on the subway platforms. Responding officers encountered multiple victims with slash wounds and the suspect still armed with a large knife, according to the NYPD.

Mayor Addresses Attack

“I have been briefed on an incident that occurred at Grand Central Station this morning. Reports indicate a man slashed three people on the platform with a machete. Officers shot the man when he did not drop the machete. He has since been pronounced dead,” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.

Officers confront armed suspect

Police said officers issued repeated commands for the suspect to drop the machete, but he instead advanced toward them. One officer then discharged their weapon, striking the suspect.

Following the shooting, officers immediately began CPR on the suspect while additional personnel from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department assisted in triaging the wounded victims until emergency medical services arrived.

Victims hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries

Three victims—an 84-year-old man, a 65-year-old man, and a 70-year-old woman—were transported to area hospitals with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The suspect was also taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
