Sheetz visit delivers $1M surprise before breakfast

6AM scratch off turns into $1M shock for Virginia man on routine stop

Chester, VA — A quick early morning stop before washing his wife’s truck turned into a life-changing moment when a Hopewell man uncovered a $1,000,000 lottery prize at a local gas station.

The anonymous winner purchased two Power Payout Multiplier tickets from the Sheetz located at 231 East Hundred Road and scratched them inside the store. One of the tickets revealed the top prize.

Virginia law allows winners of $1,000,000 or more to remain anonymous, and lottery officials confirmed the man chose to keep his identity private.

The winner said the discovery came around 6 a.m., after realizing the ticket was worth $1,000,000 shortly after scratching it.

He selected the one-time cash option of $476,000 before taxes instead of receiving the full prize in annual payments over 30 years. He told officials he plans to use the money to purchase a home.

Power Payout Multiplier is a Virginia Lottery scratch-off game offering prizes ranging from $10 up to $1,000,000. Officials said this marks the second top prize claimed in the game, leaving one remaining. The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 816,000, while the odds of winning any prize are 1 in 4.14.

Lottery proceeds continue to support education across the state, with more than $901 million contributed in the last fiscal year. Hopewell City received over $6.3 million in funding.
