Jersey City Officers Stop Violent Robbery, Arrest 5 Suspects in Summit Avenue Sting
JERSEY CITY, NJ — A man escaped serious harm after officers interrupted a violent robbery in progress and arrested five suspects tied to an alleged setup involving $3,000 in designer merchandise, officials said Friday.
The incident unfolded April 13 near Summit Avenue, where Jersey City Police Department officers on patrol spotted a disturbance and stepped in, halting what investigators later determined was a planned robbery tied to a pre-arranged sale.
Robbery Plan Unravels Mid-Deal
According to officials, the suspects coordinated a meeting with the victim under the guise of a transaction before assaulting him and attempting to take his property. Officers intervened during the active confrontation, preventing what authorities described as a fast-moving situation from escalating further.
Mayor James Solomon credited the officers’ timing and awareness for stopping the attack. “Our officers stepped in at the right moment, prevented further violence, and ensured those responsible were held accountable,” he said in a statement.
Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose described the encounter as volatile and unpredictable. “This was a fast-moving, violent situation that had the potential to escalate quickly,” Ambrose said. “Our officers recognized it in real time, intervened without hesitation, and took decisive action.”
The victim suffered minor injuries, including abrasions and bruising, and declined additional medical treatment at the scene.

Charges Span Assault, Kidnapping, and Weapons Offenses
Authorities identified the driver as Erik Lagunas, 18, of Paterson, who faces multiple charges including conspiracy, robbery, simple assault, aggravated assault, kidnapping, possession of a weapon, and assault by auto. He was also issued summonses for leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a suspended license.
Three additional adult suspects were named: Carmelo Greene, 21, of Paterson; Kelvin Pichardo, 27, of Paterson; and Emil Nauffal Gutierrez, 21, of Clifton. Each faces charges of conspiracy, robbery, and simple assault.
A fourth co-defendant, a 17-year-old from Clifton, was also charged but not publicly identified due to age.
Investigators allege all five individuals played roles in orchestrating and carrying out the attempted robbery, though specific actions by each suspect were not detailed in the release.
Swift Intervention Prevented Escalation
The arrests highlight how quickly routine patrols can turn into critical interventions. Officers were not responding to a call but instead identified suspicious activity in real time while monitoring the area.
Officials emphasized that the encounter could have resulted in more serious injuries had police not intervened when they did. The presence of a weapon among the charges and the inclusion of kidnapping allegations underscore the severity of the situation investigators believe was unfolding.
While the case centers on a single attempted robbery, it reflects a broader concern around arranged meetups for high-value goods, where transactions can become targets for coordinated theft.
Ongoing Case and What Comes Next
All four adult suspects are facing criminal prosecution, while the juvenile’s case will proceed through the appropriate court system. Authorities have not released additional details about evidence recovered or whether more arrests are possible.
The investigation remains active, and officials have not disclosed court dates or custody status for the defendants.
At this stage, all five suspects have been charged in connection with the attempted robbery, and the case is moving forward through the judicial process.
