Scammers pose as sheriff deputies in Cape May phone scheme targeting residents
Cape May Court House, NJ — A wave of scam calls impersonating law enforcement has prompted officials to warn residents after callers falsely claimed victims owed money and threatened arrest.
The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and Sheriff’s Office said individuals have reported receiving calls from people pretending to be sheriff’s deputies. The callers tell victims they owe fines or missed court payments and demand immediate payment to avoid arrest.
Authorities said the scammers often request payment through gift cards, wire transfers, or other non-traditional methods.
Officials emphasized that law enforcement agencies do not contact individuals by phone to demand payment or threaten arrest in exchange for money. They also do not request payment through gift cards or prepaid debit cards.
Residents are advised to hang up immediately if they receive such calls and avoid sharing personal or financial information.
Anyone who believes they may have been targeted or victimized is asked to contact the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-465-1135.
Officials also urged residents to share the warning with others, particularly older individuals who are often targeted in similar scams.
